Porteous Architecture

The former school is located in a stunning spot, beside a small burn, with panoramic sea views over Loch a Siar to West Harris. The original school was a simple building, clad in red wood, which was cherished by the community for the many memories which it evoked. The vision and challenge was to convert this very rudimentary building into a contemporary island home without losing the charm and simplicity of the original building.

The old school building exterior was retained and improved, and the building was extended and reoriented towards the stunning sea views. A smaller element was then added which contains the Master suite. This was designed to be more organic in nature, reflecting the dramatic landscape of the location and acting as a foil to the original building. The two elements were linked together with a sauna which has a spectacular sea view.
